Engine Zone Control Cable for Walk-Behind Mowers

This is a new aftermarket engine zone control cable, also called the operator-presence or engine-brake cable. It replaces the current Husqvarna and AYP number 582991501 and the older number it superseded, 158152. The cable connects the safety bail bar on the handle to the engine's zone control brake. You squeeze the bail against the handle to run the mower, and the engine stops the moment you let go.

What It Controls

This is the safety shutoff cable only. It is not a throttle, choke, or self-propelled drive cable. If your engine will not shut off when you release the handle, or the blade brake drags and makes the mower hard to start, a worn or stretched zone control cable is a common cause.

Fitment

Fits a range of Husqvarna-built walk-behind push mowers sold under the Poulan, Craftsman, Weed Eater, Murray, AYP, and Southern States brands. Verified applications include the Poulan HD3X, Weed Eater CHD4QE22SC and HD4QE22SD, Craftsman 917379290, Murray M22450, and Southern States SO45N22, SO45N22S, and PO5N22SH, among others. Because these mowers are identified by manufacturing numbers, confirm your model number and the cable routing before ordering.

Specifications

The OEM cable length is about 44.5 inches. Some aftermarket versions are measured longer, so compare the new cable to your old one and confirm the routing from the handle bail to the engine brake bracket before you install it.
