What This Part Is

This is an ignition condenser (also called a capacitor) for Kohler K-series engines that run a breaker-point, battery-and-coil ignition system. It is an electrical ignition component, not an air conditioning condenser. The condenser mounts in the ignition circuit alongside the breaker points. Its job is to absorb the voltage surge each time the points open, which stops the points from arcing and burning, keeps the spark hot, and helps the engine start and run smoothly. A weak or failed condenser shows up as hard starting, a weak or intermittent spark, misfiring, or quick point burn-out.

Fitment

It fits the classic Kohler K-series cast-iron engines used in garden tractors, generators, welders and other equipment: single-cylinder K91, K141, K161, K181, K241, K301, K321, K341 and K361, plus the opposed twin-cylinder K482, K532 and K582. It also fits the points-ignition KT17 and KT19 twins. These engines powered many Wheel Horse, Cub Cadet, John Deere, Allis-Chalmers, Case and Bolens machines, among others. Fitment depends on the engine, not the tractor brand, so identify your Kohler engine model and spec number before ordering.

Points Ignition Only

This condenser is for engines that still use breaker points. If your engine has been converted to an electronic or breakerless ignition, it does not use a condenser and this part does not apply. During a tune-up it is good practice to replace the condenser at the same time as the points.
